The filtering result is a genus-level, model-based comparison for Cenozoic-present Western/Central European tree lineages; its comparator populations differ, with global species pools for extinct/extant genera versus native regional species for the Holocene flora, and its current-climate baseline is 1981–2010. Exact excerpt
Our results show how the current regional tree flora was progressively filtered towards the colder and drier margins of climate space. This coincided with the losses of most heat-tolerant lineages. The study fit genus-level niche models for tree genera that had a presence in Western and Central Europe during the Cenozoic. Climatic centers of regionally extinct and extant genera were estimated using all available tree species within each genus globally, whereas the Holocene regional tree flora used only native species pools of Western and Central Europe. Current climate was 1981–2010; five of 237 attempted models were excluded from the plot because of convergence problems.
