The global conclusion is based on a necessarily limited, mostly 2D sample and treats each profile as representative of its region; it is not a complete 3D census of all global subduction interfaces. MEASUREMENT

Exact excerpt
As the global inventory of seismic data constraining the interface geometry is necessarily limited, we take the profile megathrust fault geometry to be representative of the fault geometry in the respective regions as the key simplification. Owing to the sparse, largely 2D nature and short along-strike distance (10–15 km) of the majority of available seismic data, we focus our study on the first-order question of how the roughness, maximum interface coupling and earthquake size vary at the locations where we have data across subduction zone interfaces worldwide.
