Exact excerpt
The study continuously monitored the tsunami-created Otsuchi population from 2012 through 2020, collecting 2,698 sticklebacks across changing numbers of ponds. Purging was analyzed at 667 species-diagnostic loci: 65 linked to reproductive-isolation QTL, 591 genomic-background loci, and 11 potentially advantageous loci. The generation produced in 2011 was defined as the first generation; the 2020 sample represented the tenth. Two other tsunami-struck habitats showed greater retained Gasterosteus nipponicus ancestry, and the study could not distinguish adaptive introgression from drift at some retained loci.
