Exact excerpt
The study collected 820 metagenomes from two stony coral genera, Porites and Pocillopora, and fire corals, Millepora, around 32 islands and 99 reefs throughout the Pacific during the Tara Pacific expedition from 2016 to 2018. Existing metagenomes from 412 coral samples and 371 sponge samples were added for contextualization. Genomes were annotated with GTDB r207 and clustered at a 95% whole-genome average-nucleotide-identity threshold, yielding 4,224 species-level clusters; 645 were identified exclusively in Tara Pacific coral samples, of which 638 were absent from GTDB.
